It's so worth being stuck to the front of the 'Fridge...

I've held it in just about as long as I could stand it.
I would have taken out a billboard if I could have afforded it.
But being of humble stock and fearing the wrath of the subject mentioned below, I figured it is best to let other's say a few words on a job well done.

Perhaps one of my most prized masterfully crafted BabyCakes received an award recently. Not with out diligence and determination, fortitude and inspiration, some time, and of course a little help from some others that I will thank in advance here and now…
First and foremost Our Divine Inspirer-God, and a little nudge from Donnie, my dear friend Cindy, and all those who have been with me and mine through it all.

Sit back and please enjoy the next few paragraphs and some photos of a job worthy of being stuck to the front of the 'Fridge.

My Son, Nichols Robert Schields, Eagle Scout.

PORT JERVIS
New Eagle Scout joins honored few

Nicholas Robert Schields of Port Jervis recently became one of the few Boy Scouts who achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.

During an official Eagle Scout Court of Honor held at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, his leaders and others saluted Schields and challenged him to future greatness.

"I have the honor to give the Eagle Scout Charge on the occasion of your elevation to the highest rank in Scouting," said Ralph Cowell, Eagle mentor and Scout Committee leader. "Your position, as you well know, is one of honor and responsibility. You are a marked man. As an Eagle Scout, you are expected to exemplify in your daily life the high principles and values expressed in the Scout Oath and the Scout Law. You have assumed a solemn obligation to do your duty to God, to your country, to your fellow Scouts, and mankind in general."

Only 4 percent of American Boy Scouts reach the rank of Eagle.

Schields, a member of Boy Scout Troop 173 for the past seven years, will graduate from Port Jervis High School in June and already has enlisted in the Air Force ROTC. He will begin college at Virginia Tech, where he plans to study in the field of communications.

Schields credits each of his leaders with inspiring him toward the rank of Eagle.
As a Scout, Schields earned more than the 21 badges required for the rank of Eagle as he worked his way through the ranks. Last year, he completed the final step by carrying out an official Eagle Project, planning and leading his troop in fixing 14 abandoned, broken bicycles for area youth.
In conjunction with the Port Jervis Police Department and Port Jervis Youth Center, Schields and his fellow Scouts and leaders restored and presented bikes to 14 area youngsters this past holiday season, as well as holiday food baskets, turkeys and gift cards for their families.

Schields praised his leaders and fellow Scouts, those who contributed financially to his project and all who assisted in helping his project succeed. Many were on hand to offer words of praise during the official ceremony.

PJFD Chief William Worden was among the community leaders who presented certificates and congratulatory remarks to Schields.

"On behalf of the men and women of the Port Jervis Police Department, we thank you for your model citizenship and service to our community," Worden said. "We are extremely impressed with your leadership ability in taking a pile of old bicycles, bringing them to life again and bringing smiles and happiness into the hearts of area youth."

Schields said he was touched by the outpouring of support and the special ceremony held in his honor, and says he was personally fulfilled during the official Board of Review held in February as a final step in the Eagle process. He credited his leaders, family and others for helping him to achieve this success, including Marion Rohner, Boy Scout Troop 173 leader Ralph Cowell, Scoutmaster Yvon Leroy, Juvenile Officer Stanley Buczek, and his parents.

His words of advice for others: "Persevere and don't procrastinate. It is well worth it."

31,556,926 seconds--Give or Take

Did you know there are 31,556,926 seconds in a year?

Now I'm certainly no math wiz, I leave that to CDorr & The Deb. However, with a calculator and a little common knowledge of multiplication even I could figure this one out. And since this is a Leap Year there will be 31,557,600 seconds in this year. To be more exact, which is what Mathematics is, there have been 30,088,800 seconds since I wrote and posted my first blog. Loosely translated that is a little under a year ago (by 17 days). If you want to double check me here go back and re-read my first entry (assuming you read it the first go-around). Basically, I began blogging last Easter break.

Well in this past year a ship load of things have happened. Some for the good, better, best and still there are those times I refer to as challenges. Some may use the synonyms hiccup, trying, hurdles, unfortunate, bad luck, and even down-right shitty, but I will stick with challenging. I think that for each challenge there is a lesson to be learned. In the past decade, these challenges have taught me many life lessons and have provided me with fortitude, wisdom, wrinkles, agita, weight gain, and a prescription for Lexapro (to which I have recently eliminated from my daily intake).

So, I suppose I need to confess my prolonged absence. I had so much to share but for shear cowardly reasons, I didn't feel I should. I was thinking about how other people would look upon some of my new experiences as if I were saying, "nanaanaana" or that they were so far fetched that they couldn't possibly happen to me. I was having some great fun and interesting times with people I never dreamed of becoming so close to. People who would encourage me, ME. Not to self promote or make themselves feel better. But to genuinely give to me because they could. I have been encouraged to do, explore, try, be a part of, experience some things I would never have had the intestinal fortitude to do on my own--well at least not with out major amounts of alcohol. But stone-cold-sober, I marched head on into things like being a private chef for an evening, assisting a master chef for a fundraising event with duties to numerous to count from time management, kitchen traffic control, taste tester, plating, service, to clean up.  Talk about rewarding!! Just to spend time in that kitchen is a dream come true. This lead to being a collaborator of baking and making a variety of things over the next few months and will continue long into the future.

BabyCakes took a giant leap and was my sanity throughout the summer months keeping me busy and affording me some necessary funds for the household. It gained a loyal following from Two Rivers Grill and Port Java. Not being an immense peanut butter aficionado, I went on the reaction of those who find it the ultimate compliment to chocolate and I have been able to adapt this combination into the BabyCakes Peanut Butter Surprise. It is by far the most requested treat at Two Rivers and by individual clients alike.  By special request (and for a few extra cents) one can delight in a rich moist dark chocolate cake, with a peanut butter cup plunged into the center upon emersion from the oven, when cooled topped with smooth creamy peanut buttercreme frosting, and a drizzle of chocolate fudge and peanut dust. It is love at first bite and usually all I hear is "ummmmm". It has been proclaimed to be better than……. %@#.......  well you get my point.

In late September (I know, it reminds me of a song too) not in '63 but in 2011, BabyCakes went to the Downtown Fall Foliage Festival with several varieties of goodies to share. It was a great success I wouldn't have been able to do it without Nana's help. It was a beautiful day weather wise, the people totally embraced  the display, and loved all the various flavors--especially the BabyCakes in a Jar. (lower left on the table).
There were many more cupcakes and even cakes at times for various occasions I will include some in a photo gallery in the next blog.

In addition to all the ups and not-so-up side of things since Late August, there have been much change in my little corner of the world.

In no particular order but all of monumentous proportion:
***August--Maggie went off to what turns out to be her last semester away at Cortland before she returns home in May to begin her internship at the PJPD (for her final semester). On the 12th day of May 2012, she will participate in the Commencement Ceremony and graduate in December.
***September--Nick's a senior at PJHS. Football, football, football…consumes us and with great pride. The season is off to a roaring start, he is chosen to be on the "royal" court, elected President of the Honor Society, and so much more.
***November--Thanksgiving Day--Spectacular weather--the perfect day! Big game, big rivalry, winner keeps the Erie Bell (huge train bell) for Bragging rites. We all gear up to head to the field in full Port Pride for the first Middletown-Port Game played on Glenette Field on Thanksgiving day since 1969.

Onto the field they come, pre-game announcements, introductions, National Anthem, the announcement of the 2012 recipient of the Faller Award--the player from Port--Nick Schields. So sSOOOoo proud. And then the kick off and here we go. Such excitement. They look good and are playing hard.
Then comes the third play of the game……..
      Nick's on the ground--
         he gets up---
             shakes it off----
                goes back in-----
                   plays a couple more downs---------
then the other guys on the field notice he's not quite himself-----------
Off to the sidelines he goes--------
for what would be the rest of this once in a lifetime game.
He is hysterical crying and won't settle down.

I am called down onto the field. Who Me? It's almost unheard of for the Mom to be called down to the field. Trying to calm and reassure him he will be able to play, he is monitored by his coach. After the first quarter he is reassessed he can go back in if he is cleared. BUT he is still hysterical and still really confused.  he is able to collect himself enough to go into the locker room with the team at the end of the second quarter.  Half time comes and the boys come into the locker room where Nick proceeds to give a pep talk.
He now knows he can not go back in, pumps them up to fight even harder and he'll be supporting them from the sides. They head back out to the field and Nick quietly complies to leave in the ambulance but only if they sneak him out unnoticed.
It turns out he had a severe concussion.  He was like 10 second Tom.  By the time he was being released, in came his buddy Dan to see him…."We won! We won THE BELL!!!" and up pulled the truck with the bell loaded on the back and the team following right behind it. Clanging all the way!!!! It was about this time he started to regain some memories of the last 24 hours.

And just how does he top that one. Well, he then begins his application  process to colleges for the following fall and when he asked me if he could apply to Virginia schools, I replied, "sure, but if you get accepted I'm going with you".

Just when you think things are crazy enough along comes a little girl name Shirley Rose (who came into our lives on 9/10/11) via CDorr. It turns out she will give us all a chance to take a closer look as to why we need to live and continue to work to make the world a better place. The village must pull together to help raise this child. She is so precious and such a joy to be around.  My heart pains me when I think of the life she would have without our love. Since our hours are opposite I take the day shift caring for our little love and "Grammie" CDorr has her the rest of the time with Auntie Peggy helping out too.

***December--the day after Christmas we went to visit Virginia Tech. I knew then and there-that is where he would be. He was like a little boy on Christmas morning seeing the cookie crumbs Santa left behind with excitement. He could not contain himself. We went to two of the "college" stores and if time weren't getting to the point where they were closing the stores, we'd still be there. (By the way, He is not really a browser and shopper. He is usually a man on a mission.)
So since the district is not hiring, filling sub positions, or showing any signs of moving forward, we actually decide to make a plan to go with Nick should he get into a school in VA.

Hold on, Oh wait just a minute…
***January--along comes a job opening at a law firm in town, I apply....and I get the job! Wow, I am so excited. A full time nine to fiver.  What about Shirley?  What about my job at school?? And what about Virginia?
Shirley--goes to a babysitter, I bid ado to the school district entering a whole new world, and Virginia--we shall see.

Did I say Wow?  I meant HOLY WOW BATMAN!!!!  What the hell was I thinking? Talk about a learning curve. All the time I've prided myself on grammar  and now I have to write sentences like--"Furthermore, the aforenamed requests said petition here by be with withdrawn without prejudice." and that means exactly what???? Sorry it's up to the judge to translate. I'm almost 3 months into it and think I am finally getting a grip on this new language of legaleez.  I call it speaking Yoda.

Fat forward to***April and the calendar is getting filled with all that comes with the Senior year.
The scholarship package has been turned in, the trip to Disney,  academic & athletic award nights,  ceremonies,  then it's off to the proms and that parental nightmare of a weekend at the shore, Baccalaurate, testing, and then Graduation…PHEW!!!

I am ecstatic to be back sharing some of my life's events.  Thanks for reading and I hope I didn't bore you with my prouder mommy moments. Notice, I also neglected to share the challenges as I continue to make an effort to over come them and bring a positive sense to my blog.

There were many more cupcakes and even cakes and fun food for various occasions. I will include some in a photo gallery in the next blog.

So--Until the next episode, TTFN. Jeanmarie

Frosting for the Cause

Recently  I was asked to participate in a fundraiser to benefit the cancer fund.
Unfortunately, there are many varieties of cancer and awareness ribbons of as many colors to show us an outward sign of the type we hold closest to us or support.  But perhaps the most widely known is the pink ribbon for breast cancer awareness.  It just also happens to be breast cancer awareness month.  A time when the stores are full of many pink items from Tic Tacks to Swiffer mops.  With a portion of the proceeds going to research.
It is also no coincidence that I write this page today, October 8th…and dedicate to a wonderful person many called friend including me…Cathy Drake Van Horn.  Today is the first anniversary of her passing for this dreaded poison that robbed her of so much.  Cathy and I had been friendly and grown up together in a terrific community, worked in her moms store and beauty shop together, and spent many good times watching Sunday football, and cooking "hunting camp widow's" dinners.
So to honor the memories and spirit of Cathy and all those who have lost their battle with this retched enemy, I have had my (a chunk of) hair dyed pink, baked almost 200 white & pink pomegranate mini (or as my son named them) Preemie-BabyCakes frosted with white and pink frosting, and will be on hand to assist at BloomingNails Salon to work selling baked goods, applying pink streaks to hair, extensions, or feathers in the hair.  The event is being called--"A DAY OF DONATING TO CANCER RESEARCH IN HONOR OF CATHY VAN HORN" Please join us.
Perhaps you've noticed a couple of my posting with a cute little logo about The Cause on my FB page over the last few weeks.  I joined an online group that shares information and awareness about cancer…Frosting for The Cause.  Please take a moment or two and check out their incredible sites.
By the way, all the donations and proceeds raised at tomorrows event will be given to the Susan B. Koman Walk in honor of Cathy.
Thank you for taking the time to care & don't forget to self exam, visit your doctor on a regular basis, and get your annual mammogram.
Until the next episode, TTFN.  Love Jeanmarie

Jeanmarie is the owner of BabyCakes out of Port Jervis, New York.  Convinced by a good friend to start showcasing her work, in April of this year she began blogging.  That was just about the same time that she began making her delectable cupcakes for her local coffee shop on a regular basis.  Since that time, Jeanmarie has been busy tending to her family of two children, her growing baking business as well as the needs of many in her community.  She is an avid supporter of fund-raisers in her area and does not hesitate to help, be it by donating her baked goods for sale or lending a caring hand whenever and wherever she sees the need.

Wow, How Time Does Fly!

My apologies to any BabyCakes' fans if you have been looking for an update (KJL), but to say I've been busy would simply be an understatement.

Since Memorial Day weekend and my last blog, BabyCakes has taken on a life of it's own.  Yes, Millie, I know what you're thinking right about now and the answer is still a resounding 'No'!  You know I can't handle the pressure of a test.

Well, to make things sort of short and sweet, I think I'll just show you a sampling of the goodies that have passed through my kitchen in June & early July.......First there was Soap Box Derby, then Hanah's Sweet 16, followed by graduation, and 2 adorable little boy birthdays--GO Yankees!  Throw in a visit to Mom's and celebrate Fourth of July.

There you have it.  They say a picture is worth a thousand words, these must have a value of a thousand calories, give or take a few.
A few weeks ago we visited my family in Virginia.  While there for some rest (yeah okay, we'll go with that) and help Nana support the troops, I got to play with the new phone I bought and got to 'hangout' on Facebook and clean up my emails.  I fully intended to catch up on the blog too but kept getting distracted…Distracted?  Who Me?  Yes Me, distracted.  Distracted by emails and chats involving BabyCakes.  Ahhhh such a nice distraction.  (Oh, did I mention I forgot my medicine and got so stressed out about not having it?)

As I sat at the kitchen table one night 'chatting' with Mrs. GoodKnight, I began to get pop up chats and postings on my wall from 2 other people…One wanted BabyCakes for a date next month and the other sheet cakes, yes 2 sheet CAKES, for his sister's graduation party.  Yippie!  Okay that set the tone for our departure time.  Time went from a stand still to the anticipation of should I bake here and take it home to decorate or leave Thursday instead of Friday and just bake at home.  But than again I did have the Parade BabyCakes to make and the ones for the Church Breakfast People's Picnic, not to mention get some done for Judy Java & Danny 2-Rivs (Oh yeah I forgot to tell you about Dan, remind me to go back to him).   So I figured Thursday would be the better bet.

The next morning my hubby said he'd love to visit Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, not the one here with the racetrack.  That's when I got an email from Cooper and that's when time went from the anticipation of leaving to WE GOTTA GO!

Coop is a friend I met through Judy Java.  He was asked by someone about having a cake made for a 1st birthday.  He thought of Me.  OMG!  ME!  It was like when I found out I was pregnant, I was excited but at the same time worried about how it would come out.  I couldn't wait to tell me mom.  Of course I said yes, then I asked for when would they need it?   And it turns out it was that upcoming weekend….aaarrrhhhHHH!!!!!  Oh boy, it's do or die time.  But I was still so excited I was busting to get to work.

The day we drove home and the following day was so stressful (it could have been the fact I had not had my meds in a week).  Yeah, the meds or lack there of, were likely a contributing factor but on Friday when Maggie called me and said Nick came busting through the kitchen door at work asking her if she knew what day it was, it dawned on me EXACTLY why I was so crazed last three days.

...It was JULY 8th.
I immediately had that hollow feeling in the pit of my stomach that was so empty and took me back to that horrid place 11 years ago.  11 years--My God how time has flown.  I felt the hatred wash over me and wanted to envelop my kids in a safe secure embrace.  I sat down at the computer and there was Donnie's post--a note on his wall pertaining to that day and the loss of his Aunt Nancy.  All of a sudden I got a grip on my emotions and was overcome with a sense of hope…of fullness… and of love to be able to stand in my kitchen, baking and when he walked in the door , I was able to hug him and tell him just how glad I was that I still had him here with us.

The thoughts of what we had, what has happened and what we've been through as a family, and of what is to come…was like all the ingredients on the counter.  Alone they are just basic things, nothing special.  But mixed all together they become something wonderful and comforting and familiar.  We were given the opportunity to continue to mix our basic selves to make one wonderful and comforting family regardless of all the craziness and crappy things that come our way.
Luke's First Birthday
Dillion's 8th B'Day Cake
Canolli Graduation Cake for Amber
Now, if things weren't crazy enough, One of my emails with Coop lead to an utterly knee-jerk decision…The family whom I was making the BabyCake birthday for, was looking for someone to cook a dinner for them and their guests as well.  What do I do?  WTH-Why Not?  Talk about putting yourself out there.  Like throwing out the first pitch standing striped bare on the pitchers mound in Yankee Stadium on opening day.  But to do what you love and do it up to a higher level was like hitting the winning homerun.  I went right to Mommy mode and thought of Sunday dinner.  What a dinner it was.  Maggie told me to take pictures of the food when plated but I told her that would be a little pretentious but the host , Little Luke's dad, was all about the photo opps.  As I put the meal on the platters and in the bowls, he arranged it on the counter just so and snapped away.  So much for pretentious.    I hope to have pictures of it soon to share.

In the mean time I hope you enjoy seeing all the goodies I've been turning out, Especially the Yankee Cake for my 2 special buddies.

Until the next episode, TTFN.  Love Jeanmarie
